BEIJING, China – When I first saw this image below I suddenly remembered the movie “Confessions of a Shopaholic”, well not actually the whole movie and definitely not about the story. The only part of the movie where I can relate the image below was whenever there’s an upcoming sale or store opening, people goes for it and not just some people – a big crowd. There were actually more than a thousand people composed of local and foreign personalities, who came on the first day opening of the supposedly Apple‘s flagship store at Sanlitun district. Most of them were already there the night before the opening day ignoring the freezing temperature. Why? Last Friday was the marked date where Apple planned to open their flagship Apple store and sell the hottest iPhone iteration today – the iPhone 4S.
Unfortunately on the opening day last Friday, Apple decided to pull everything off and suspend the grand opening of the Apple store. According to Apple they had to do this to protect their own staffs against this huge crowd who patiently waited for the store to officially open. This was also the recommendation of China’s local police. Apple don’t want to compromise their own people just because of selling iPhone 4S. The iPhone 4S will still be available for the people of China through online purchasing and/or from their official retailer such as their official partner in China – Unicom.
Apple’s concern motives for their own staffs turned that more than 1,000 people outside wild and frustrated after learning that there will be no opening at all on that day, hence, they pelted the gleaming glass of the Apple store with eggs. And there were tensions between these interested buyers of iPhone 4S against China’s local police.
This incident was very alarming and police had to disperse all of them away from the store. Reports says, aside from those individual or group of people who stayed at Sanlitun district just to either nose around or serious buyers there are also people hired by scalpers. Scalpers are people who’s primary objective is to resell iPhone 4S in a much higher price. Again, why do they have to do this? According to Apple the demand for iPhone 4S in China unexpectedly went high – higher than what they can even supply. This statement actually made some greedy people to buy and sell these hot items from Apple.
If you were in their situation, would you do the same?
